Esophageal cancer is among the 6th to 8th cause of cancer mortality according to the Global Cancer Observatory. The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Its symptoms cause a significant impact on patients lives and are often: swallow disorder (dysphagia), unintentional weight loss, heartburn and chest pain. The early treatment for esophageal cancer is imperative for a better prognosis and enhances the chance of the patient survivor. Esophagectomy has an important role in the cancer treatment and minimally invasive approach has been achieving an increasingly solid result in recent years.
The ISDE (International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus) hosted a virtual presentation and discussion regarding cancer of the esophagus, managing the disease including surgery for esophageal cancer and other treatment approaches.
The Esophageal Cancer Virtual Tumour Board held on August 20, 2020, and moderated by Mark van Berge Henegouwen, Amsterdam University Medical Center (Netherlands) and Lorenzo Ferri, McGill University (Canada), is presented in four separate segments below. Watch different segments when you have the time or all at once, the choice is yours.
ISDE wishes to recognize and thank the following individuals for their contributions to this virtual presentation:

Management of paraesophageal hernia review of clinical studies: timing to surgery, mesh use, fundoplication, gastropexy and other controversies
DOTE Volume 33, Issue 8 | Editor's Choice Free Article
Despite paraesophageal hernias (PEH) being a common disorder, several aspects of their management remain elusive. Elective surgery in asymptomatic patients, management of acute presentation, and other technical aspects such as utilization of mesh, fundoplication or gastropexy are some of the debated issues. The aim of this study was to review the available evidence in an attempt to clarify current controversial topics. Totally minimally invasive esophagectomy versus hybrid minimally invasive esophagectomy: systematic review and meta-analysis.
DOTE Volume 33, Issue 8| Featured Article Members Only Article
Regarding the need to establish the safety and feasibility of total versus hybrid minimally invasive esophagectomy this systemic review provides a comparison between those two methods for the treatment of esophageal cancer. It raises attention towards the importance of having randomized controlled evidence in that matter. Discover through its findings the difference between the lymph node count, anastomotic leakage rate, morbidity and operative data on both groups. Read the Totally minimally invasive article.

Dr DeMeester was ISDE's fourth president, during presidency he facilitated two important changes: First he shaped the ISDE into a truly worldwide society by establishing it as a 501-C3 nonprofit organization. Secondly, Dr DeMeester altered the structure of the society, such that the presidency would switch between surgeon and internist, thus encouraging multidisciplinary leadership and participation in the meetings and membership.

Achalasia is a relatively rare esophageal motility disorder that is mainly characterized by a lack of peristalsis of the esophageal body and absence or incomplete relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter. Its symptons, frequently heard from patients’ stories, produce a huge impact on their lives.
The ISDE (International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus) held its first live virtual presentation and discussion regarding achalasia of the esophagus through its types, how to diagnose and what is the most appropriate achalasia treatment. Discussion also included the role of achalasia surgery and common questions such as, what is the role of POEM in achalasia treatment.
This virtual presentation was moderated by Education Committee Co-Chairs, Simon Law and Lawrence Ho, this virtual event included didactic lectures covering updates in diagnostic assessments, endoscopic approaches, and surgery. This interactive session explored multidisciplinary approaches to tailor treatments and is presented in five segments below.
Updates on pathophysiology and work for Achalasia presented by Vani Konda from Baylor University Medical Center (USA)
Update on endoscopic treatment for Achalasia presented by Haruhiro Inoue, Showa University (Japan)
Surgical treatment for Achalasia presented by Marco Patti, University of North Carolina (USA)
Effects of Post Myotomy GER in Achalasic Patients: Data from a 65 Years Long Follow-up Program presented by Sandro Mattioli, University of Bologna (Italy)
Achalasia Case Discussion lead by Vani Konda from Baylor University Medical Center (USA)
