The Editors of Diseases of the Esophagus (DOTE) Journal are pleased to invite submissions for the 2022 Best Junior Faculty/Trainee Manuscript Award. This award recognizes the top original research manuscript by a junior faculty or trainee author accepted for publication in the Journal between January 1 and December 31, 2022.

Nomination Deadline: April 7, 2023

The Journal also has an award for the most Outstanding Junior Faculty Peer Reviewer each year, and winners are determined by the Co-Editors-in-Chief based on the number of peer reviews completed, timeliness and quality of the peer review. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Week, or GERD week for short occurred, November 20-26, 2022 and ISDE put out a series of awareness raising posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Our goal is to provide ways for our members and community at large working with this disease to raise awareness of your expertise within your own networks. To this end, we invite you to share these posts with your own message by following or visiting us on social media.

The ISDE is pleased to announce the World Congress Scientific Program Committee Co-Chairs for the 2023 Congress, Nicholas J. Shaheen from the University of North Carolina Faculty of Medicine, Rebecca Fitzgerald from University of Cambridge and Wayne L. Hofstetter from University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. 

This multi-specialty committee is currently developing a program that covers a range of topics devoted to increasing scientific and medical knowledge of the esophagus in disease and in health. 

The ISDE Annual World Congress brings together organizations, industries and specialists in fields related to the esophagus including gastroenterologists, endoscopists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, allied health, and more.

The 18th World Congress for Esophageal Diseases (ISDE 2022) was originally scheduled to take place in beautiful Tokyo, Japan, in conjunction with the 76th Annual Meeting of the Japan Esophageal Society. Tokyo has all the ingredients to make this gathering a great meeting, with its culture, gourmet food, infrastructure, and facilities.

Unfortunately with COVID-19 still rampant, given the implications of travel restrictions and ultimately for the well-being of the ISDE community, the ISDE Board of Directors believed moving to a virtual-only format to be the best solution. The transition from a hybrid to virtual meeting allowed for an equally exciting, content rich, network driven, and safe congress.

The Program was developed by the Program Committee under the guidance of the Co-Chairs Simon Law (The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China), Chika Kusano (Kitasato University, Japan) and Paul Schneider (Hirslanden Medical Center, Switzerland), with input from Hideaki Shimada, President of the JES Congress (Toho University, Japan).

The opening Keynote was presented by Ken Kato and entitled Precision and Personalised Oncology for Esophageal Cancer. Professor Kato is Chief of the Department of Head and Neck, Esophageal Medical Oncology, Chief of the Department of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology, and Chief of the Biobank Translational Research Support Section, Clinical Research Coordinating Section, Clinical Research Support Office at the National Cancer Center Hospital, Tokyo, Japan.

The Presidential Lecture, entitled Population Screening for Esophageal Cancer. How Can We Make It Work?, was given by the President of ISDE, Sheila Krishnadath. Professor Krishnadath works as a gastroenterologist at the University Hospital of Antwerp and is a principal investigator at the University of Antwerp. She has a long-standing track record on translational research on esophageal diseases. Her work mainly focuses on Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma.

The Japan Esophageal Society (JES) hosted three sessions focusing on the latest JES guidelines for esophageal cancer; JES Guideline on Oncologic Treatment for Esophageal Cancer, JES Guideline on Endoscopic Treatment for Esophageal Cancer, and the JES Guideline on Surgical Treatment for Esophageal Cancer.

Two affiliated societies of ISDE organized their respective forum: The Chinese Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (CSDE) discussed various treatment strategies for esophageal cancer in the session “What are the Optimal Treatment Regimens for Esophageal Cancer?”, while the European Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ESDE) focused on “Oligometastatic Disease in Esophageal Cancer: Moving Landscape in the Era of Immunotherapy”.

The Diseases of the Esophagus Festival session was aimed at honoring and paying tribute to the individuals who had contributed most to the success of the journal during the last two years. The six most cited articles published in Diseases of the Esophagus (DOTE) were presented.

Diseases of the Esophagus (DOTE) presented the Best Junior Faculty/Trainee Manuscript Award to the top original research manuscript by a junior faculty or trainee author accepted for publication in the journal in 2021, and the Outstanding Junior Faculty Peer Reviewer Award to the top junior faculty Peer Reviewer of 2021 for the journal. This year’s winners are Dr. Yoshitaka Ishikawa (University of Michigan, USA), and Dr. Alice Tsai (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, United Kingdom).

DOTE published a special ISDE 2022 DOTE Congress Supplement (Volume 35, Issue Supplement 2, September 2022), containing all abstracts submitted to the 18th ISDE World Congress for Esophageal Diseases; the supplement is now available online.

ISDE is committed to the advancement and support of trainees, fellows and early career individuals, and was pleased to introduce the formation of Young ISDE, a new standing committee within the ISDE. The goals of the committee are the development of new knowledge and advancing understanding of esophageal diseases, promoting education and knowledge exchange among trainees and young investigators, facilitating networking, and providing information on training and fellowship opportunities.

This newly established committee showcased their first session at ISDE 2022, covering the topics of Building a Career in Translational Research, Developing Esophageal Clinical Trials in 2022, Creating the Next Generation of Allied Health Professional Researchers, and Establishing International Research Collaboratives.

More than 50 scientific sessions were presented at the Congress, offering a multitude of opportunities for education and networking, encompassing panel discussions, and video and oral presentations. There were close to 100 speakers and more than 500 oral and poster abstract presentations. The EECCME granted a total of 15 credits for the program; these credits are transferrable to Category 1 credits.

The Congress was very well attended with close to 600 participants, including 160 participants from Japan. All sessions and presentations were recorded and are available to registrants for on-demand viewing on the virtual Congress platform until December 31, 2022.

ISDE would like to extend its sincere appreciation to all attendees, speakers, contributors and committee members for making ISDE 2022 the extraordinary success that it was. A special thank you is extended to Professor Hideaki Shimada of Toho University, Japan for his exceptional assistance, support and partnership. We look forward to seeing everyone again in September 2023 in Toronto face-to-face for the 19th World Congress of ISDE.

Aims of Young ISDE:

• To promote education; the exchange of scientific and medical knowledge of the esophagus among a community of trainees and young investigators from medical, surgical, associate health groups.

• To facilitate the establishment of scientific connections between trainees, early career clinicians, and young investigators in the field.

• To advertise training and fellowship opportunities in the field of esophagus diseases internationally and enhance interdisciplinary training.

Definitions

To ensure the representation of trainees and early career clinicians within Young ISDE, it should be noted that ISDE members will only be considered eligible to become a member of the committee if they are currently in training, or within ten years following completion of training to the level of Consultant, Attending or equivalent.

The International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Magnus Nilsson as the next Co-Editor-in-Chief (surgeon) for the Diseases of the Esophagus (DOTE) Journal. Effective September 29, 2022 Dr. Nilsson will succeed Professor Giovanni Zaninotto who is stepping down during the ISDE 2022 World Congress in Tokyo, Japan upon completing his second four-year term.

Published continuously since 1986, DOTE is a leading journal in the field of esophageal diseases with a broad international readership. The journal covers all aspects of the esophagus – epidemiology, investigation and diagnosis, and multidisciplinary treatment. The journal includes clinical research papers, short reports, commissioned review articles, correspondence, book and equipment reviews, annotated abstracts and announcements of meetings.

Dr. Nilsson is a professor of surgery and head of the Division of Upper Abdominal Surgery at Karolinska Institutet and senior consultant surgeon at the Karolinska University Hospital. His main clinical and scientific interests are gastric and esophageal cancer, focusing on minimally invasive surgical techniques, tailored lymphadenectomy, adjunct oncological therapies, and management of airway fistulas and other severe surgical complications. Dr. Nilsson has led several international randomized multicenter trials, such as the completed NeoRes I and II trials and the currently ongoing NEEDS trial. He is the Past President of ESDE and currently sits on the ISDE Board of Directors. He is also the chairman of the Swedish Society of Upper Abdominal Surgery and the Swedish National Registry for Gastric and Esophageal Cancer. For the last eight years, Dr. Nilsson has been one of the journal's most active associate editors.

Dr. Nilsson will be joining Dr. Neil Gupta, Co-Editor-in-Chief (medical) in managing all aspects of the journal including the editorial board and reviewers, working with the publisher on developing a world class vision for the journal, processing submitted manuscripts, identifying opportunities for improvement, ensuring content diversity, managing the DOTE Awards and working with the Associate Editor (Social Media) to highlight the journal on social media.

The International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus hosted a virtual presentation on Leaks After Esophagectomy: Handling a difficult complication on March 22, 2022 in collaboration with the Malaysian Upper GI Surgical Society (MUGIS). Dr. Ramesh Gurunathan hosted this 90-minute presentation during which presentations were delivered on ways to minimize leaks after esophagectomy, endoscopic management of leaks and questions were answered from a live audience.

The International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus is inviting abstract submissions to the 18th World Congress for Esophageal Diseases being held in Tokyo, Japan from September 26-28, 2022.

The ISDE 2022 World Congress is the event to present your new discoveries and connect with a global network of industry experts in esophageal diseases. As a hybrid Congress, this year's presentations can be either virtual or in-person at the Congress in Tokyo, Japan.

The Congress brings together multiple specialties focused on the clinical management and research of patients with esophageal diseases including basic scientists, physicians, surgeons, other health professionals and members of related industries.

This year we are pleased to be working closely with the Japan Esophageal Society (JES), who will be hosting their annual meeting prior to the ISDE World Congress at the same venue. The programs for both society meetings will be independent and you may choose to attend one or both meetings.
