ISDE News

The International Society for Disease of the Esophagus (ISDE) is pleased to announce the 2022 World Congress for Esophageal Diseases will be held in Tokyo, Japan from September 26-28, 2022.

In order to serve the esophageal community better the ISDE is working closely with the Japan Esophageal Society (JES), who will be hosting their annual meeting just before the ISDE World Congress at the same venue. The programs for both society meetings will be independent and delegates may choose to attend one meeting or both.

ISDE President, Prateek Sharma was quoted as saying “Japan is known for their cutting-edge treatments in the field of endoscopy and surgical procedures. This is a great opportunity for members and attendees from around the world and from Japan to observe, learn and share information on the esophagus.”

ISDE Executive Director, Mark Ferguson commented that “the 2022 Congress in Tokyo, Japan marks the 4th time this meeting has been held in this country and honors a longstanding relationship between ISDE and the Japanese Esophageal Society (JES). We anticipate this meeting will have the highest attendance numbers of any of our congresses to date.”

Surgery for benign esophageal diseases may be complex, requiring specialist training, but currently, unlike oncologic surgery, it is not centralized. The aim of the study was to explore the opinion of European surgeons on the centralization of surgery for benign esophageal diseases. A web-based questionnaire, developed through a modified Delphi process, was administered. Read the full article.

Congratulations to the DOTE Award winners who were recognized during today's DOTE Awards ceremony, at the ISDE World Congress. The Diseases of the Esophagus Journal awards were created in 2018 to recognize outstanding junior faculty members and help promote professional and educational interest in the esophagus and related diseases. Since last year's Congress was cancelled due to Covid-19, the winners were recognized today for both 2020 and 2021. Well done to the following winners and thank you for your support of the Diseases of the Esophagus journal. 

Best Junior Faculty/Trainee Manuscript Award

2021 - Evangelos Tagkalos
University of Mainz, Department of General Surgery and Transplants, Germany

Evangelos is a Junior Consultant at the University of Mainz. His main interests are esophageal cancer surgery and robotic surgery. The title of his awarded article is: Robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE) compared to conventional minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) for esophageal cancer: a propensity-matched analysis.

2020 - Katrin Schwameis
University of Vienna/ Keck School of Medicine University of Southern California, Austria/USA

Katrin is a Consultant at the Vienna School of Medicine Department of General Surgery (Division of Visceral Surgery). She spent two years as a fellow in minimally invasive and foregut surgery at the Department of Surgery, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. Her main interests are esophageal motility disorders, esophageal functioning testing, Barrett's esophagus, esophageal adenocarcinoma, and  gastroesophageal reflux disease.

The title of her awarded article is: Clinical outcome after laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication in patients with GERD and PPI refractory heartburn.

2021 - Fredrik Klevebro
Karolinska Institutet, Department of Digestive Diseases, Stockholm, Sweden

Fredrik Klevebro works at Karolinska Institutet. His main interests are Esophageal and Gastric cancer, Mini-invasive surgery, and Epidemiology.

2020 – Joonas Kauppila
University of Oulu, Finland, Sweden

Joonas Kauppila, Assistant Professor of Surgery, received his M.D. in 2013 and Ph.D. in 2014 from Oulu, Finland. He became a lecturer in Cancer Biology in 2015, at the age of 27 years, as one of the youngest faculty members in medical sciences ever in Finland. Joonas worked as a Research Fellow at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, from 2016 until 2019.

As part of our ISDE 40th Anniversary celebration, you’ll read in upcoming months about each of the ISDE Congresses. This article summarizes the 15th and 16th ISDE World Congresses.

The 15th ISDE World Congress was held in Singapore in 2016 (Figure 1) in close conjunction with the Formula 1 autoracing competition (Figure 2). This overlap in events attracted a number of registrants who came for the F-1 race and stayed for the Congress. This was the ISDE’s first meeting in East Asia outside of Japan, and was hailed as a big success. The Congress was presided over by the ISDE President, Prof. Ken Wang (Figure 3). The city provided a very relaxed multicultural experience, as exemplified by the Congress Dinner venue in the Singapore Gardens (Figure 4). Casual exploration of the wide variety of foods and cultures was a frequent pastime of attendees (Figures 5A, 5B).

The 16th ISDE World Congress took place in Vienna, Austria, in September 2018, with a notable opening ceremony featuring local classical music and dancing (Figure 6), and the venue was the University of Vienna (Figure 7), a venerated institution famous for graduates such as Freud, Mahler, Gödel, Paracelsus, and Schrödinger. The ISDE President was Professor Yuko Kitagawa (Figure 8). The attendance was the largest recorded for an ISDE World Congress (Figure 9), the scientific program was diverse and interesting, and the weather was excellent, permitting outdoor display of the scientific posters (Figure 10). The venue for the gala dinner featured the spectacular Vienna City Hall (Figure 11).

The approach to managing achalasia has been streamlined, but management of non-achalasia motility disorders remains challenging. The ISDE (International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus) hosted a virtual presentation focused on the evaluation and management of non-achalasia motility disorders moderated by Michael Vaezi, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, USA.

During this 60-minute presentation panelists discussed opioid induced esophageal dysfunction, non-achalasia spastic disorders (jackhammer, distal esophageal spasm), and hypomotility disorders (ineffective esophageal motility and esophageal aperistalsis).
